Felixton College are immensely proud of Alex Dodd, whose exceptional talent in Robotics and Coding continues to reach new heights.
Alex and his team, Martian Mechanics, took first place overall and earned the coveted “Best Design” award at the Cars4Mars African Rover Challenge, hosted at the Riversands I-Hub in Johannesburg. Inspired by NASA’s Mars rover missions, this competition drew over 100 teams from 11 African countries, and Alex’s team was declared the winners after months of design, coding and engineering brilliance. Their 11kg rover, built with a lightweight aluminium frame, 3D-printed components, and AI-powered electronics, tackled a gruelling Martian terrain course, proving both endurance and innovation. Following their success, Alex’s team was personally invited by the South African National Space Agency to exhibit their rover at the University of Zululand during the launch of International Space Week. Alex was also invited to speak at the AI, Machine Learning & Data Community Day at the Richfield Umhlanga Campus, where he inspired audiences with his story of perseverance and creativity.
In Alex’s own words:
“Failure is not the end, it’s the start of understanding.”
They are so proud of Alex for representing Felixton College with such confidence, humility and vision. The future is bright for this young innovator, and we cannot wait to see where his curiosity and creativity will lead to next.
