Twelve of Hoërskool Swellendam learners took part in the first of many NSRI Lifeguard Training courses.
The course included running, swimming, fitness, and first aid training. One of the biggest challenges they faced was being given rescue scenarios and having to figure out for themselves how to handle them. Our swimmers also practiced on CPR dummies, learning how to treat them as if it was a real-life situation.
On the second day, they completed a run-swim-run test — running 100 meters, swimming 400 meters, and then running another 100 meters. They were also required to swim 25 meters underwater, tread water with their heads above the surface using only their legs and arms for 15 minutes, and perform a rescue simulation where they were required to save an unresponsive partner and administer CPR.
The course was extraordinary, and we all gained a wealth of knowledge.A big thank you to Wildré Rautenbach and Mike Wood for guiding and supporting our swimmers. This was truly an amazing experience! This is just the beginning of their qualification, as they will still be completing beach and ocean training assessments. We are proud of our swimmers who have stepped up to the challenge and excited for what’s to come!
These learners will now be able to earn a lovely salary working as life guards during the December holidays if they so choose, as well having priceless life-saving skills that add value to our school and community.
