It has been a busy, yet fantastic start to the hockey season for the 2022 1st boys’ hockey team. The team has played 26 matches to date and come up against the best hockey schools in the country. They have participated at the York Easter Festival, Fairmont Hockey Tournament, U18 Boys Independent Schools Hockey Festival (hosted by York) and the Hibbert Shield Hockey Tournament hosted by Grey High.
As far as statistics go, the team has played 26 games – won 20, lost 5 and drew 1 match. They have scored 132 goals and conceded 30. Captain Sean Slater is heading up the goal scoring chart with 68 goals to his name, however none of the above statistics would be possible if it were not for a complete performance from every member of the team.
What makes this team exceptional is their team spirit, style of play and opposition they have come up against. Matches against SACS, Bishops, Paul Roos, Grey High, St Davids, Pearson, Paarl Gym, Paarl Boys High and Menlo Park put this team on another level. Most of the above-mentioned teams are in the top 10 ranked hockey schools in the country with SACS coming in at number one! This is an incredible achievement if one considers the limited practice time available to the team, limited resources, limited manpower and pool of players to select from. With the season still in its infancy, exciting times lie ahead for this team.
