Reliable water supply transforms learning environment in local schools

Schools across Boshof and Hertzogville no longer need to cancel lessons due to a lack of water. Each school has received a fully developed and operational borehole, now supplying reliable water to over 1,500 learners and teachers each day. The infrastructure was officially handed over to each school last week.

A learner at Aramela Combined School, one of the beneficiary schools, shared how he thinks the new infrastructure will improve daily life at the school, “We will now have access to water at any time during school hours. Our ablutions will no longer have a bad smell. This will contribute a lot to healthy living.”

Funded by Boshof Solar Power, surveys to locate water underground were completed at Aramela Combined School and Boshof Combined School in Boshof, along with Malebogo Primary School, Kegomoditswe Primary School, and Senzile High School in Hertzogville, in August 2025, followed by drilling in September. While water was successfully found at most sites, some schools needed additional drilling to improve the quantity and quality of water. Further testing has now confirmed that all five schools have a reliable water supply.

Noluthando Mazibuko, Economic Development Specialist at Boshof Solar Power, explained why the project was prioritised, “Access to safe, reliable water is fundamental to dignity, health, and everyday life. By providing these boreholes, we’re helping to ensure a more consistent and independent water supply for the schools, one that is less vulnerable to the immediate effects of dry spells compared to surface water sources.”

To make sure the water is safe to use for drinking and cooking, the necessary treatment systems have been put in place, with each school responsible for the long-term maintenance of its borehole.

This initiative forms part of Boshof Solar Power’s socio-economic development (Whole School Support Programme), which focuses on supporting education in surrounding communities. It aims to improve learning through a range of initiatives that create a more supportive and inclusive environment for learners, strengthening both access to education and overall well-being.
