What has pre-season been like for this team, and what has it revealed about the character, attitude, and commitment of the squad? The pre-season was hard, with all the fitness, but it connected the group more than in previous years.
What makes this year’s first team different from previous teams, and why should supporters be excited to watch you play this season? Unlike previous teams, our team didn’t have the Grade 1 and Grade 2 foundation and basic rugby skills during COVID. The team isn’t the biggest, fastest or strongest, but we have the most heart.
What goes through your mind in the moments before you step onto the court or field wearing your school colours, and what does that opportunity mean to you personally? When I step onto the field, it feels like I’m a different person. Playing for my school is a privilege and an opportunity to show why I’m playing with this team.
Every strong team has its own identity — how would you describe your team’s playing style, attitude, and overall spirit? We play for each other and play as a team.
What standard have you and your team set for yourselves this season, beyond simply winning matches? We have set a realistic standard with the season’s ups and downs. This standard will be lifted when we play at our full potential.
Which fixture stands out most on the calendar for you, and what makes that match especially important to the team? Our final game against Lochnerhof, our interschool. That is where we must play our best game.
Who in this squad do you think could surprise people this season, and what makes them a player to watch? Our fullback, Colton Lesch. At only 12 years old, he makes a massive impact on the team. What does being part of this sport at your school teach players that goes beyond the game itself? It teaches us that not all things should be done alone — you need your brothers around you.
As captain, what kind of leader do you want to be for your team this season, and what example do you hope to set? I want to be a leader who leads by example and doesn’t give up on anyone or at any time.
When people watch your team play this year, what do you hope they will say about the group afterwards? I would like them to remember how much this team has developed and grown during this season.
