We caught up with Annekin Grobbelaar, the first-team rugby captain from Northern Cape High School to hear his thoughts on pre-season preparation, team goals, and what it means to lead with passion and purpose.
How challenging was pre-season training, and how has it prepared the team for the season ahead?Pre-season training was tough at the start, with various fitness, strength, and conditioning sessions. It pushed us to our physical limits and prepared the team by building endurance, strength, teamwork — and most importantly, a strong brotherhood.
What specific strengths do you believe this year’s team has that will set you apart from the competition? Our communication, coordination, and the relentless effort, hard work, and determination shown by every player. We play as one team, with one goal.
How does it feel to run onto the field representing your school as part of the first team? It’s a huge honour to represent the school’s first rugby team. It means carrying pride, responsibility, and respect for the white jersey. I am especially proud to wear the same “Wittes” jersey my father once wore — following in his footsteps.
What traditions or values make your school’s rugby culture unique? Singing the Wittes song before we run onto the field reminds every player what we’re playing for — the importance of the white jersey and the badge we represent.
What team goals, if any, have you set for the season? Our goal is to make a strong comeback this season after previous results, to win key matches, and to showcase the exciting, high-quality brand of Noord-Kaap rugby.
Which upcoming fixture excites you the most, and why is it a key match for your team? The Classic Clashes match against Diamantveld. The history between our schools and the ‘gees’ it brings to both the schools and the city makes it a truly special game.
