Cape Town – Reddam House Constantia Grade 11 student Nicholas Schrieder has been named Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the South African Premier Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) after an outstanding performance representing Western Province. The 17-year-old won all of his Singles matches during the tournament and played a key role in helping his side compete against some of the country’s top amateur golfers.
For Nicholas, being selected for the Premier IPT team was already a major milestone in his golfing journey. “It was a huge honour to be selected to represent Western Province in the Premier IPT team,” he said. “This was my third IPT, but the Premier IPT was definitely the biggest and most memorable experience so far. It was a great group of guys to be around, and I learned a lot from players with more experience and knowledge.”
He said receiving his Western Province number – becoming the 171st player to represent the province at Premier IPT level – was particularly meaningful.
Nicholas said being named MVP had reinforced his belief that he could compete at the highest level of amateur golf in South Africa. “Being named MVP means a lot to me because it showed me that I can compete against some of the top amateur golfers in the country,” he said. “It gives me confidence in my game and reassures me that I’m capable of performing at a high level. At the same time, it motivates me to keep working hard and striving to become the best golfer I can be.”
Reflecting on his form during the tournament, Nicholas credited his consistency throughout the week. “I was driving the ball really well throughout the tournament, which put pressure on my opponents to do the same,” he said. “Overall, every part of my game was working well, and that allowed me to stay confident and control my matches.”
One of the key moments of the tournament came during a tightly contested opening Foursomes match against Southern Cape, where Nicholas and his partner fought back to secure a crucial half point for Western Province. “We stayed calm, trusted each other, and kept fighting throughout the match, which helped us secure the half point for the team,” he said.
Nicholas described the tournament as an important learning experience, particularly in understanding the standard required to succeed at elite level. “I quickly learned that making pars often wasn’t enough to win holes – you needed to make birdies and stay aggressive when opportunities came,” he said. “It showed me how important consistency and mental strength are at that level.” Balancing competitive golf with the demands of school requires discipline and careful time management, he added.
Executive Head Alex Gitlin said Nicholas’s performance reflected not only exceptional golfing ability, but also the discipline and composure required to compete at elite level. “We are incredibly proud of Nicholas and all that he has achieved at the SA Premier IPT,” said Gitlin. “To be named Most Valuable Player while competing against some of the country’s top amateur golfers is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to Nicholas’s dedicated passion, consistent plan and strength of character. We congratulate him now and look forward to applauding his future successes.”
Says Nicholas, “My next goal is to achieve a national win. I would also love the opportunity to represent Golf RSA nationally in the future and continue competing at the highest level possible.”
