’n Lewende tradisie van groei en erfenis by Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool. By AHMP word ’n besonderse tradisie gehandhaaf – een wat diep in ons geskiedenis gewortel is. Reeds in 1935 het leerders begin om bome op die skoolterrein aan te plant – ’n simboliese daad wat groei, hoop en toekomsbou weerspieël.
Hoewel die gebruik met die verloop van tyd vervaag het, is dit weer met trots laat herleef deur me. Louisa Slabbert. Sedertdien het verskeie betekenisvolle boomplantgeleenthede op AHMP se skoolterrein plaasgevind:
In 2007 het Juf Venter, met die afsluiting van haar termyn as hoof, ’n boom Fuchia (Halleria lucida) geplant waar die restaurant Vincent’s nou staan.
In 2008 het Juf Jordaan, as hoof van AHMP, ’n wildepruim (Harpephyllum caffrum) by die saal geplant. Onder me. Slabbert se leiding is nog verskeie ander bome op die terrein geplant. Daarna is die tradisie onder leiding van me. Priscilla Marais gevestig dat die VLR elke jaar in September ’n boom sal plant.
Vandag leef hierdie mooi gebruik steeds voort. Op 17 Maart 2026, tydens Huis Steijn se 86ste verjaarsdagviering (die koshuis is op 20 Maart 1940 ingewy), het mev. De Wet ’n geelhoutboom geplant – ’n inheemse, immergroen boom wat volharding en ’n hoopvolle toekoms simboliseer.
Elke boom vertel ’n storie. Elke wortel dra ons erfenis. Elke nuwe blaartjie herinner ons: die toekoms groei hier.
