Muir College Environment Club undertook a coastal hike

On Saturday, 2 May, twenty-one members of Muir College’s Environment Club undertook a challenging yet rewarding coastal hike of approximately 18.5 km over seven hours, travelling between Schoenmakerskop and Kini Bay. This stretch of coastline is renowned for its rugged beauty, featuring dramatic limestone cliffs, rocky shorelines, and sections of coastal escarpment that required careful navigation and steady footing.
The route exposed learners to a diverse range of indigenous flora typical of the Eastern Cape coastal belt, including hardy dune vegetation and salt-resistant plant species that thrive in the harsh maritime environment. Along the way, learners also encountered tidal pools, seabird habitats, and sweeping ocean views, all of which contributed to a rich, hands-on environmental learning experience.

Parts of the hike involved traversing uneven terrain along the escarpment, with occasional steep ascents and descents that tested both physical endurance and mental resilience. Despite these demanding conditions, all participants demonstrated remarkable determination, teamwork, and inner strength throughout the journey.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Hawkins and Mr Field for their leadership and commitment to providing such meaningful outdoor experiences, exposing our learners to the unique beauty of our local coastline.
