Michaelhouse’s cricket club padded up for a packed programme on Saturday, with many teams enjoying a T20 triangular with DHS and Northwood.

The firsts recorded a mixed bag of results with a win and a loss in low scoring affairs. 101/7 was nowhere near enough to keep Northwood at bay; but the boys from Balgowan were able to defend an even lower 96/9 for a 26 run win over DHS.

The second XI also finished the day with a 50/50 record at home on the Roy Gathorne Oval, with a win over DHS and a 23 run loss to Northwood. With a brace of wins, House’s thirds were the toast of the day, while the fourth XI went down by 92 runs to Howick’s first XI. Michaelhouse’s fifth XI batsman, Miguel de Fretias was one of the club’s top scorers of the day, but his 52 wasn’t enough to prevent Howick’s second XI claiming a good four wicket win.

House’s U16A lads went down by seven wickets to DHS before winning the toss and sending Northwood in to bat. James Reeve picket up two early wickets in the powerplay, checking Northwood at 8/2. A determined 139 run third wicket stand set a rock solid platform, giving Northwood 139 to defend. Michaelhouse’s Pat Lambert and Dylan Hewlett kept their team in the hunt, but always a shade behind the required rate. A late charge by Michael Spencer kept the match interesting, but Northwood’s death bowling was just too good, ensuring them a well deserved 20 run win.

The U15A and U14A outfits went down in both of their encounters. U14A batsman Henry Love’s 63* contributed the lion’s share of his side’s 113/6 against DHS, who were undeterred as they rolled to their five wicket win over Michaelhouse. House’s U15B boys won one and lost one in interesting 100 ball format games. Playing up against Howick High, House’s U15C and U14C boys enjoyed comfortable wins.

A threeway waterpolo showdown was also contested between Michaelhouse, DHS, and Northwood. While House’s third team lost both of their fixtures, the U14A crew won both comfortably; and the U14B side returned a win and a loss. Michaelhouse’s U15A and B teams played a single fixture each coming away with a 11-1 win against Northwood for the A team and a loss to DHS for the B side.

On the basketball court, the boys from Balgowan returned up the N3 with a mixed bag of results. The firsts and seconds chalked up comfortable wins, 55-25 and 45-15 respectively; but the thirds came undone, going down 12-27. House’s U15A side scraped home with a 34-33 win while the U16A boys enjoyed a more confident 25-16 win. On tour, Michaelhouse’s U14A boys chalked up five wins in seven starts.
