After an extraordinary 48-year teaching career, with 39 of those years dedicated to St Dominics Newcastle, June Muller bids farewell to the classroom – but not to her passion for nurturing young learners. Her journey is a testament to a lifelong commitment to education, adaptability, and the joy of teaching. June began her teaching career in 1975 at a government school in Durban North, where she taught Grade 1 learners for six years while also sharing her artistic talents with foundation phase learners. In 1981, she transitioned to a private school on Durban’s Berea, continuing her focus on Grade 1 education and even teaching English to senior primary learners after her main teaching duties were complete. In 1985, June relocated to Newcastle, where she found her true teaching home at St Dominics Newcastle in 1986.

She was initially asked to take over the Group 3 post at the pre-school and quickly rose to become Head of Department (HOD) for the pre-school. Over the years, she seamlessly transitioned between teaching Group 3, Group 4, Group 5, Grade R, Grade 1, and eventually Grade 3 learners. Her ability to adapt and excel in various roles is a reflection of her dedication and versatility. “I have loved all the different grades I’ve taught,” June shared. “However, Grade 3 became my favourite. The last two years have been a blessing.” Her career was marked by leadership as well. When the HOD of the Foundation Phase relocated, June was asked to take on the role, overseeing both the pre-school and foundation phase while teaching Grade 3. Though her time in Grade 1 was extensive, her return to Grade 3 in recent years brought her immense joy. “I have been very privileged to teach at St Dominics for so long,” she reflected. “It has truly been a long stay filled with love, learning, and growth.” As June steps into retirement, her passion for education continues. She looks forward to one-on-one teaching, focusing on helping young children discover the joy of reading with understanding and mastering challenging maths concepts. This new chapter reflects her enduring dedication to unlocking every child’s potential.
