This July and August, Bridge House School sent both a Senior and a Junior team to the Western Cape Provincial Debating Championship for the first time. Over three long days — the 25th and 26th of July, and the 1st of August — each team took on a demanding six debates, facing some of the province’s strongest debating schools.
Our Seniors were Mia Kruger (Captain), Joy Lees and Jenna Shaw, while our Juniors were Khwezi Gobodo (Captain), Anni Buys, Lailah Meyer, Zinzile Zikhali and Ayla Samanani. Debaters tackled an impressively wide range of motions, from the role of trade unions and how best to combat xenophobia, to the rise of artificial intelligence and the IMF’s role in helping countries tackle hyperinflation — supercharging their general knowledge as much as their debating skill.
Both teams notched up a number of convincing wins. While neither progressed to the quarter-finals this time, the experience was invaluable and a superb foundation for future years. With emerging talent on display across both teams, this campaign lays the groundwork for Bridge House to grow into a debating powerhouse.
