Passion Play 2023. After a three-year break in production, due to the Covid pandemic, we are happy, thankful, and very excited to announce that the annual Lady Grey Passion Play will be back in 2023.During the weekend of 7-9 April 2023, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lady Grey Passion Play. This event became the Oberammergau of South Africa. The Passion Play starts on Good Friday at 14:00 and only ends on Easter Sunday. The epic history unfolds in three main parts over the three days that it takes to perform the entire script: the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah,
Christ’s early life and the start of his ministry; Christ’s miracles, teachings, capture and death; Christ’s resurrection, ascension, and the founding of the early church. Features such as the beautiful old Dutch Reformed Church, the Perdedam and the streets of Lady Grey become the settings for moving scenes from the life of Jesus. This makes for great audience participation.
We are thrilled to announce that a former principal and choir master of Lady Grey Arts Academy Mr Botes Gresse and his choir from Howick, KwaZulu Natal, will join us for the special 20th anniversary of the Passion Play. They will be performing the Mass on Saturday evening, after the crucifixion scene. The community, school and church are already organising and planning this once in a lifetime event. Food stalls, souvenirs and art exhibitions will be available all weekend. We aimed at exposing as many people as possible to the joy of Easter Weekend. Hereby the Lady Grey Arts Academy would like to invite anyone who wants to take part in the production or who would like to contribute in any which way to contact the director, Johan Hattingh.
