Young chefs rise at Dundee High School

Six years ago, when Consumer Studies teacher Mrs Edwards began teaching at Dundee High School, she had a vision: to create a cooking competition where learners could showcase their creativity, passion and culinary skills. This year, that dream is finally becoming a reality with the school’s very first Ready Steady Cook competition.
The competition will begin on Monday with a sifting round, where 24 learners will compete for a place in the Top 12. From there, the excitement will build through a series of elimination rounds – Top 12, Top 8, Top 6 and Top 4, culminating in a thrilling Grand Final where the ultimate Ready Steady Cook champion will be crowned.
Adding to the excitement, the competition will feature talented guest chefs and industry professionals who will visit throughout the event. These experts will demonstrate cooking techniques, share their knowledge and inspire learners as they develop their culinary talents.
There will be prizes awarded at every elimination stage, while the overall winner will take home a special trophy and prize, marking them as DHS’s first Ready Steady Cook champion.
The journey has already begun in the classroom. This week, Grade 10 learners completed their first Consumer Studies practical, filling the kitchen with flour, laughter and the smell of freshly baked scones. Despite the flour-covered counters and a few nervous moments, the learners worked together with enthusiasm and determination.
“They did a fantastic job,” said Mrs Edwards. “I’m incredibly proud of their effort and teamwork.”With energy, creativity and plenty of delicious dishes ahead, the DHS Ready Steady Cook competition promises to be an exciting and inspiring experience for both learners and staff.
