Wynberg Boys’ High School Chess Tour to Grey College: Building Memories and Future Success. Over the weekend of 20 – 22 February, our chess teams made their annual pilgrimage to Bloemfontein to compete in the prestigious Grey College Invitational Chess Tournament, where they competed against some of the best chess schools in the country. This tour remains a definitive highlight of the school year, providing our players the opportunity to test their mettle against some of the strongest players around. While silverware eluded us this year, our boys exceeded expectations with very respectable placings amidst incredibly stiff competition:

1st Team: 5th place in the Prestige Section (out of 12 teams).
2nd Team: 7th place in the A Section (out of 26 teams).
3rd Team: 20th place in the B Section (out of 42 teams).
A Spirit of Camaraderie
What truly makes these tours exceptional is the character of the boys we take along. This year’s group made the most of every moment, from supporting one another during intense match analysis between rounds to a spirited game of late-night hide-and-seek at our guest house.

Their passion for the game was tireless. After two days of mentally exhausting, long-format chess, the boys were still at it, drawing a crowd of spectators at the Spur on Saturday night and again at the airport. Other passengers couldn’t help but watch as our boys laughed and joked through doubles games while waiting to board their flight back to Cape Town.
Foundations for the Future
At the end of the day, while medals are a wonderful recognition of achievement, the true value of this tour lies in the memories and stories these boys bring home. By sharing their experiences, they inspire our junior players to work hard for the opportunity to go on tour in the years to come. This dedication to the culture of Wynberg Chess is what will undoubtedly set us up for future victories.
