World Pet Day is a special day where people all around the globe celebrate the love and companionship that pets bring into our lives. Whether it’s a fluffy cat, a playful dog, a colourful fish, or any other animal friend, pets bring joy, laughter and endless cuddles to families everywhere. On World Pet Day, we take extra time to show our pets just how much we care for them. This might mean giving them extra treats, taking them for a fun walk or playtime, or simply spending some quality time together with lots of hugs and snuggles. It’s also a day to remember the importance of being responsible pet owners. This means making sure our pets have a safe and loving home, providing them with proper food, water and healthcare and always treating them with kindness and respect.

In a classroom setting, show and tell can be a fantastic way to build confidence in children. This allows them to speak in front of their peers in a safe and supportive environment, helping them overcome any fear of public speaking and boosting their self-esteem. Moreover, it fosters a sense of community and appreciation for each other’s interests and experiences. For children, World Pet Day can be a great opportunity to learn about the different kinds of pets people have around the world, how to care for them and why it’s important to treat animals with love and compassion. It’s also a chance to celebrate the special bond between humans and animals and to appreciate the joy and comfort that pets bring into our lives every day.

Our children did a show and tell to celebrate their furry, scaly, or feathery friends. During these show and tell sessions, children excitedly shared stories about their beloved pets, displaying their unique personalities, funny antics and heart-warming moments. It’s a delightful opportunity for children to bond over their shared love for animals and learn from each other’s experiences of pet ownership. These show and tells not only foster a sense of community among young pet enthusiasts but also encourage empathy, responsibility and appreciation for the animals that enrich our lives.

We even learn more about our teachers, secretaries and principal’s pets too

Teacher Nicole’s two furry friends: Savanna is a mix Border collie breed who licks you to bits every second of the day. She is one and a half years old. She must touch some part of you before she can fall asleep. She has an extremely long tonque. Her name should have been Shadow as she follows you wherever you go. She got her name because she was exchanged for drinking money. She was also adopted but from Pet Rescue in Jbay. Archie is a mix Jack Russel breed who loves chewing his hoof for fun and snores like an old man. He is 2 years old. His favourite sleeping position is lying on his back and all four paws in the air. He was adopted from the SPCA in Oudtshoorn.

Teacher Michelle: This is Fudge. He is very energetic. He is his own little character. I think I gave him the name, Fudge, because he definitely makes my life sweeter. Fudge loves playing and being touched all the time.

Teacher Celia: This is my unique furry friend. She is a Maltese poodle that loves long walks on the beach. She loves to take a nap next to me and is probably the laziest and craziest little doggie.

Aunty Colette: This is Ollie. We adopted him from the SPCA in Humansdorp 5 years ago. He is now 8 years old. He is very clever and loving. His favourite activity is riding with us. He does not care for most destinations though, as he is nervous around strangers, skateboards and scooters. His other favourite person is my dad. When my phone rings he recognises his ringtone and runs to the gate to welcome him.

Aunty Ina: Matilda is a Wire Fox Terrier and is 11years old. She is very inquisitive and very spoilt! She has a free spirit and can be very stubborn, but we love her to bits!! She rules our house!

Mr Coetzer and his dog, Zara: My Australian Cattle dog. She is an energetic, loving velcro dog that loves playing, walking on the beach and swimming in the sea. She follows me wherever I go. I think she is the most intelligent dog of all. According to the breader, Monica Shifflet, the ACD is best suited to accompany cyclists on their ride – go figure. Age: 4 years.

Mr Fourie: This is my dog Rolo: He is a mix between a Staffie and a Beagle. We adopted him 3 years ago. Rolo loves people and always wants attention. We go for walks sometimes and he is very well behaved. He has two doggie friends, Luna and Bruno, with whom he goes on playdates very often. He even has his own bed right next to mine. I spoil him with doggie treats once a week. We love this dog to bits.
