SACS stages Guys and Dolls Musical

The South African College High School (SACS) is proud to present the Tony Award-winning musical, Guys and Dolls, on 20, 21 and 22 March 2025 in the Hofmeyr Hall at SACS. This popular, well-loved romantic comedy was first produced on Broadway in 1950, and SACS first produced it in 2000. So, there is added excitement of producing a 25-year revival of the show. Guys and Dolls has a regal history in the world of musical theatre. It features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a script by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1951. From the streets and sewers of New York City to the glamorous and seductive clubs of Havana (Cuba), the story is propelled forward by the tension between the earnest but proselytizing efforts of Sarah Brown of the Save-a-Soul Mission, and a gang of benign and quirky low-level criminals whose horizons extend no further than the next gambling event (crap game).

The show tackles issues of the addictive exhilaration of living a risky life built on the shaky foundations of chance and the roll of a dice, and commitment (kingpin gambler, Nathan Detroit has been engaged to Adelaide – dancer at the Hot Box Nightclub – for 14 years without any intention of marrying her) and about how, as Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown get to know one another’s histories, hopes and dreams, they become less judgmental about one another and fall in love. The cast of characters and dancers is led by Thato Gillespie-Naidoo playing the self-righteous Sarah Brown opposite Daniel du Toit’s suave Sky Masterson. Mia Arendse plays Miss Adelaide, the leader of the Hot Box dancers who longs for her fiancé, Nathan Detroit, played by Justin Gibson, to marry her. The show has been choreographed by Shayni Pappin-Davidson, and directed by Levi Alexander, who will also conduct the full orchestra of SACS musicians in the pit. Do not miss this wonderful production in the Hofmeyr Hall at SACS on Thursday 20 March 19h00 (Gala Opening), Friday 21 March at 14h00 (Matinee) and at 19h00, and Saturday 22 March at 19h00. Bookings can be made through WEBTICKETS. Guys and Dolls is presented by arrangement with DALRO (Pty) Ltd, representing Music Theatre International (MTI).
