The Reddam House Durbanville Class of 2023’s Cambridge International AS Level and A Level students have excelled beyond expectation. Fifty AS Level students achieved 126 subject distinctions while six students wrote A Levels, with one student achieving four out of four subject distinctions.

Designed to challenge the academic abilities of students and prepare them for further study at top local and international universities, an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level is the first full year of an A (Advanced) Level. The Cambridge International A-Levels and AS-Levels are part of the dual curriculum offered by Reddam House Durbanville, along with South Africa’s Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

Top AS Level achievers

The 50 AS Level students achieved 126 subject distinctions across subjects including Afrikaans Language, Accounting, Art & Design, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Drama, English Language, French, Geography, History, English Language & Literature, Maths, Spanish and Physics. A total of 22 students achieved an A aggregate with the grade average at an outstanding 77%.

Highlights of the 2023 AS Level class include:

  • 92% pass rate
  • 126 subject As
  • 22 A averages
  • Nine students achieved above 90% aggregate average
  • 77% overall group aggregate

The top 10 performing students were:

  • Jake van der Westhuizen – 94.7%. Jake completed six AS Level subject examinations in one sitting, a first for Reddam House Durbanville. To add to this exceptional achievement, Jake completed the AS Level Afrikaans examination in November 2021, achieving a phenomenal 93%. Jake has seven AS Level subjects in total, with all subjects in the 90% range. Of particular note is the 99% Jake achieved for AS Level Mathematics.
  • Marne Campbell – 93.4%
  • Minkyum Kim– 92.6%. Minkyum made the bold decision to accelerate to A Level Mathematics, writing this subject at A Level instead of AS Level in November 2023. This is an outstanding feat and his final result of 98% for A Level Mathematics demonstrates his high ability, tenacity and work ethic.
  • Murray Malherbe – 92.6%
  • Matthew van Wyk – 91.8%
  • Emma Nel – 91.4%. Emma also achieved 99% for AS Level Mathematics. She has two conditional offers to study Medicine at Stellenbosch University and UCT.
  • Kyle Hegarty – 90%
  • Talitha Vermeulen – 90%
  • Tracey Visser– 89.2%
  • Emma Willcox – 88.8%

Says Barry Nieuwoudt, Executive Head of Reddam House Durbanville, “Congratulations to the AS Level students of 2023 from Reddam House Durbanville on their excellent results, which will undoubtedly pave the way to futures filled with abundant success, inspiration, fulfilment and happiness.”

Exceptional A Level achiever

In A Level results, the six students achieved a remarkable 71% aggregate average, with Le Roux Lategan standing out for his exceptional performance. Le Roux, who wrote three A Levels, secured three A*s (90% and above) in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry, achieving 94%, 92%, and 91%, respectively. Additionally, his ambitious decision to rewrite AS Level English Language to improve on his acceptable grade gave him an additional distinction of 86%. Le Roux’s overall aggregate average stands at an impressive 92.3% for A Levels and an outstanding 90.75% when combined with AS Level English Language. He will soon begin his Engineering degree at Stellenbosch University.

Nieuwoudt congratulated all A Level students on their results, emphasising the global recognition and rigorous nature of the Cambridge International AS & A Levels. These subject-based qualifications offer students a challenging yet rewarding pathway to university study.

Reddam House Durbanville’s commitment to a dual curriculum empowers students to choose between a Cambridge International qualification or the IEB matric, further enriching their academic journey. The school looks forward to continuing its legacy of academic excellence and preparing students for a future marked by success and achievement.
