Pilditch Stadium venue for one of SA’s biggest schools athletics events. It’s here! The most prestigious High School athletics event in Southern Africa, the Curro Podium Athletics Meeting. The event will be hosted by Curro Hazeldean on behalf of Curro Holdings, on Saturday 18 February 2023 at Pilditch Stadium. Get ready for an electrifying day of high school athletics!

Approved by Athletics SA (ASA) and World Athletics, sanctioned by Gauteng North Athletics (GNA) and Supported by Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the event promises to be a day of fast-paced, high-energy athletic competition with organisers expecting a South African record or two to break. Spectators and viewers of Supersport Schools can expect to see 1500 of the most talented and aspiring young athletes from 45 schools across the country and even as far as Namibia.

A string of high calibre professional sportsmen and women will push their limits during the event’s  Classic Shoot Out. Professional athletes to keep an eye out for include South African Olympians Akani Simbine, Clarence Munyai, Tlotliso Gift Leotlela, Zakhiti Nene, Thapelo Phora and Carina Horn. World Junior 400m Champion Lythe Pillay, World Junior 100m Champion Letsile Tebogo and  African 400m Champion Miranda Coetzee will also be competing as well as Norwegian Olympian Line Kloster, Namibian Olympian Beatrice Masilingi and DRC Olympian Oliver Mwimba.

Participating schools include top sports-performing schools like Paarl Boys High School, Menlopark Hoërskool, Paarl Gymnasium, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool and Helpmekaar amongst others. Five Curro schools have also been selected, including hosts Curro Hazeldean High School and Curro Windhoek Gymnasium in Namibia.

“We are incredibly proud of Curro’s robust athletic programme – after all, the very name Curro means I run in Latin. Our programme continues to develop and advance the minds and character of our most adept learners. In fact, our aim is to help create future Olympians.  So we are thrilled to be hosting the first Curro Podium Athletics meeting where aspiring young sports talent have the chance to compete against each other on a national level and showcase their skills and abilities in front of Olymican role models,” comments Pierre le Roux, Executive Head at Curro Hazeldean.

Teams will compete in several middle-distance heats, sprints, hurdles, discus throws, and high jumps events with team trophies awarded to the best boys’ and girls athletics team as well as the best combined athletics team. Individual trophies will be presented to the best male and female track athletes, the best field athlete, the Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum and the Senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the stadium gates which will open at 6:00 AM on the day of the event. The event will be broadcast live via SuperSport Schools.
