Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School recently hosted the official opening of the Centenary gates.Construction began in May 2022 and, for six months, staff, learners, parents and passers-by watched in anticipation as the old gates were removed and the new gates took their place.
Hector Molale, the School Governing Body chairperson, recognized the efforts of previous governing body members for their dedication to ensuring that GHS had the funds to carry out a project such as this. “We need to ensure that this remains a prestigious school; strong in academics and sport. This project is not for Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. It is for the future generations. This great institution is led by women first, and men who are dedicated to the cause.”

Hector Molale (SGB Chairperson), Wynand Venter (former SGB Chairperson), Mary-Ann Akerman (former Principal), Andrew Graaf (Principal), Dudu Dlamini (KZN DOE Circuit Manager), Valerie Fowler (former Principal), Nonky Thamahane (Head Boarder Prefect), Sibongakonke Dlamini (Head Prefect) and Aphiwe Mbili (RCL Chairperson).
From the vision of architect Amanda Lee, to the construction by Lieb Janse Van Rensburg of GMR Builders, to the project management by Johan Marx, GHS Estates Manager, the end result is a majestic entrance to a magnificent school. “Consider yourselves special then, as today, for the first time, we officially open our new gates and welcome you to come through them now, and in the future. They also offer a first impression of a place and have given our beautiful AMAFA heritage red brick building suitable gates which were a much-needed addition to enhance the first impression,” said principal, Andrew Graaf.
