Maritzburg College sporting results from the holiday

Overview Sporting Achievements
There was plenty of excellent sport action over the September holidays with College boys competing in cricket, basketball, cycling and water polo events. Maritzburg College hosted the 64th Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket week which saw 24 teams from around the country take part. A huge congratulations to College’s 15-year-old Keegan Vogt who represented his country competing
in the World Canoe Marathon Championships in Croatia in the Junior Men’s K1 category, finishing in
4th position in the world!

Basketball
Congratulations to the College U15A basketball team who were the winners of the Northwood
tournament, winning five of their six games.
Summary of results:

  • Vs Michaelhouse won 37-33
  • Vs Ballito Academy won 44-20
  • Vs ESCA lost 33-35
  • Vs Northwood won 61-30
  • Vs St David’s won 42-36 (semi-final)
  • Vs ESCA won 40-31 (final)

College’s 1st stayers’ basketball team took part in the Westville Boys High U19 Stayers’ tournament
from 20 – 22 September. They won five of their eight games and finished in 4th position.
Summary of results:

  • Vs Queens College won 50-24
  • Vs Westville lost 36-38
  • Vs KES won 65-39
  • Vs Parktown won 40-34
  • Vs Pinelands won 66-36
  • Vs Jeppe won 46-34
  • Vs PBHS lost 45-50
  • Vs Westville lost 47-64

Canoeing

Well done to Keegan Vogt who represented his country competing in the World Canoe MarathonChampionships in Croatia. Competing in the K1 Junior Men’s category, and up against U18 paddlers, 15-year-old Keegan delivered a gutsy performance and finished in an outstanding 4th position in the world.
Cycling

A number of College cyclists competed in the SA Schools National Finals at Wagpos, Brits during the holidays. The Maritzburg College Cycling Team placed 4th in South Africa for all boys’ team category, and their combined efforts saw the KZN Cycling Team finish in 2nd overall (against eight other provinces and Namibia) and receive the most “gees/spirit” award. In the U18/U19 category, Luke Newlands finished in 2nd place in one event and in 3rd place in the 2nd race, while three other College boys featured in the top 30; Brent Foster 11th and 10th, Michael Jewaskiewitz 17thand 17th, Cole Sellick 20th and 26th. In the U16 category College had two boys
competing, with Kayden Searle finishing in 12th and 17th, while Daniel Janneker placed 33rd and 29th. Cole Baxter finished 16th in the U14 event.

Cricket
Congratulations to the Maritzburg College U14A cricket team who had a wonderful Festival up at
Hilton, winning all three of their matches.

The College 1st XI took part in the 64th Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week, which was hosted a College, and saw 24 cricket teams from around the country take part. Heavy rain meant that some of the fixtures were cancelled while others had reduced overs. College won two of their matches, against Hudson Park and St David’s, and lost narrowly in their 3rd match against Affies.

College’s U15A cricket team travelled up to a very chilly Pretoria to take part in the U15 Festival. They
drew one and lost two matches.

Towards the end of the holiday, College’s U17 cricket team headed up to Michaelhouse for the U.17 festival.

Water polo
College’s 1st water polo team took part in the Clifton Tournament finishing in 15th position, while the
U16A team participated in the Nick Rey U16 Tournament finishing 12th.
