Former Springbok rugby player, Heinke van der Merwe, is embarking on a new journey, leaving behind his career in the classroom to assume the role of Head of Recruitment at Glenwood. Van der Merwe’s transition to this pivotal position marks the culmination of his longstanding commitment to rugby and coaching.
Van der Merwe’s association with Glenwood dates back to 2022 when he first joined as an assistant rugby coach for the U16 team. His expertise and dedication soon saw him rise through the ranks, eventually becoming the scrum coach for all age groups within the institution.
A distinguished figure in the world of rugby, Van der Merwe boasts an impressive playing career, representing South Africa and various renowned overseas clubs. Notably, he showcased his talent at Leinster, a prominent provincial club rugby union team from Ireland, and Stade Francais, a prestigious French professional rugby union club based in Paris, competing in the highly competitive Top 14 league.

Beyond his illustrious playing days, Van der Merwe has accumulated extensive coaching experience, contributing his expertise to institutions such as College Rovers and the Sharks Academy. His journey in education began with his matriculation from Monument High School in Krugersdorp in 2003, followed by attaining a Business Management degree from Toulouse Business School in France. In 2021, he furthered his academic pursuits by completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
With a rich blend of rugby prowess, coaching acumen, and academic credentials, Heinke van der Merwe is poised to make a significant impact in his new role at Glenwood, spearheading recruitment efforts and shaping the future of Glenwood talent.
