On Sunday 9 March 2025, Cannons Creek Independent School got involved with the Cape Town Cycle Tour in two manners – a group of its Interact learners marshalled the cycle park for the event, and two of its learners participated.

As per Pinelands Rotary’s request, Cannons learners braved the hot sun, greeted and congratulated the cyclists, and directed them where to park their bikes. “It was a very successful day and the girls thoroughly enjoyed it. They were standing for most of the five hours and so had worked very hard. We were well taken care of and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience,” commented Ms Candice de Villiers, Head of Interact. A vote of thanks from the Pinelands Rotary Chair: “A heartfelt thank you to all the students who supported the marshalling of the cycle park. A great appreciation to you [Ms de Villiers] for volunteering and coordinating the team. Also appreciation for the logistics in getting them to the venue.”

Two learners also completed the race – Michael Morgan (Grade 12) completed it in a time of 3h55, whilst Kaylee Hendricks (Grade 7) rode in tandem with her dad Newton Hendricks, finishing in a time of 6h30. This achievement makes Kaylee the youngest tandem finisher as she is 12 years old, and even more impressive since it was her first one. “It was fun! There was lots of energy and music. It was hot most of the day, but it was a cool experience doing it with my dad. I look forward to doing it again next year and want to improve my time,” said Kaylee Hendricks.
