Lucy Brooke-Leggatt, a Grade 10 pupil at The Wykeham Collegiate, proudly represented South Africa in an international polo fixture against the England Junior Girls Team on Friday, 22 August. The match took place at the prestigious Guards Polo Club in Windsor, Berkshire, United Kingdom, a venue steeped in tradition and excellence.
In a hard-fought and thrilling match, the South African school girls triumphed over England with a 6–4 win, an incredible achievement, especially considering the challenges they faced. Beating England on their home ground, and on unfamiliar horses, is no small feat.
The English side, comprised of university students including two professional players, was a formidable 14-goal team. In contrast, the South African side was an 11-goal team, with three 16-year-olds, who had never ridden any of the horses they competed on.
Against all odds, the South African team displayed resilience, skill, and determination, battling all the way to the final whistle. This historic win is a testament to their courage and teamwork, and a proud moment for both Lucy and her school.
