The King’s School West Rand is incredibly proud to celebrate one of our very own, Grade 4 learner, Raegan Morgan, South Africa’s newly crowned U.10 Girls Chess Champion.
At just 9 years old, Raegan has already earned her place among the country’s top young chess players through extraordinary dedication, discipline, and perseverance. Her most recent achievement was winning the prestigious U.10 Girls SA Close, South Africa’s premier invitation-only chess tournament.
As a result, Raegan has been selected to represent South Africa at two major international events:
- The Africa Youth Chess Championship in Uganda (14–23 May 2026)
- The World Youth Chess Championship in Georgia (15–28 June 2026)
What began as a simple extracurricular activity quickly grew into a true passion. Over the past few years, Raegan has devoted countless hours to learning, practising, and competing, developing not only exceptional chess skills, but also remarkable resilience, confidence, and maturity far beyond her years.
This Thursday, 14 May, Raegan leaves for Uganda to proudly wear the green and gold on the international stage. What an honour to see her hard work rewarded in such an incredible way!
The whole King’s School family is cheering her on. Raegan, you carry our flag, our support, and our prayers with you. Play with courage, wisdom, and joy; we know you will make South Africa proud.
While chess may seem simple at a casual level, competing internationally requires significant investment in coaching, tournament travel, accommodation, uniforms, and entry fees. The Morgan family has made many sacrifices over the past three years to support Raegan’s journey and help her remain competitive at the highest level. We are so proud of you, Raegan. One move at a time, you are inspiring us all.
