Johannesburg, 29 September 2024 – The Golden Lions Youth Rugby IPT teams arrivedback in Johannesburg on Sunday, 29 September, after a thrilling week of rugby in KwaZulu-Natal. The tour started off with a surprise – unexpected snowfall in KZN, which closed roads and forced the Lions to take a detour via Bergville. But the detour offered a rare opportunity: breathtaking views of the snow and a chance for players to stretch their legs and enjoy snowball fights. For many of these young athletes, it was their first time
seeing snow and even their first time playing in it.

Opening Ceremony

Despite the challenges, including navigating unpredictable weather ranging from galeforce winds to sunny days, the Lions teams adapted and embraced the experience. For some players, it was also their first time away from home and their first chance to swim
in the sea. Heather Dolley, Chairperson of the Golden Lions Youth Rugby, expressed her pride:
“These 176 players came together and showed everyone what it means to play in a Lions jersey. We might not have won all the golds, but as a Union, we certainly won the week.” To the managers, coaches, and chaperones who gave up time with their families to support the players on this adventure, Heather extended her heartfelt thanks.

The Lions’ success was made possible thanks to the incredible support of their
sponsors. Without them, none of the memories and moments of this tournament would
have been possible. The Golden Lions Youth Rugby extends a massive thank you to:
• IceMan Cooling Gel
• NightGuard Security
• Mayfair Gearbox & Diff
• Alemga
• BIC
• Blaketon Financial
• Worldsview Technologies
• Recovery in Motion Broadacres
• LUXE Trading Markets
• 32Gi
A special mention goes to Reckless Bear and Substitch, whose kit designs were the talk
of the tournament. Everyone wanted to get their hands on it!
As the Lions take some well-deserved time off, the planning for the 2025 IPT
Tournament begins in earnest. The Golden Lions Youth Rugby is excited to announce
that the 2025 tournament will be hosted in Johannesburg, and they are eager to engage with potential sponsors.
