Sibusiso Gabuza
What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year? My team’s highlight for the season so far was beating Bealieu in our pre-season games and in the Hockey Junction semi – finals.
How do you motivate your team? I motivate my team by making them feel valued and I make sure that there is clear, frequent communication within the team, as well as encouraging them with regards to career progression. We always create a positive working environment and, finally, I give them responsibility. As the captain I take leadership and do what needs to be done, and my team will follow because if I drop my head, my team will also drop their heads, and not play to their full potential.
Who is your vice-captain and how does he/she support you? My vice-captain is Jiyaan Bosch and we have a great relationship together. Jiyaan and I communicate very well. If there’s a problem in the team, we will sit down and evaluate the situation and then try and resolve the problem. He is one of the best people you’d want as a leader, because he will back your every decision and will motivate you all the time. He is also very keen on discipline and makes sure that the team is nice and easy for a training session or a game.
What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud? As a team we would like to bring back the streak and win the Northern Cape Hockey League. What will make me proud is that we continue working together consistently as a team, and reach for the highest levels. I want to see the players not giving up, even if we are losing 1-0.
What are your plans for the future? My future plans are to finish school and continue with my hockey and academic careers in the North West University.
