Wembley College High School scholars performed an abridged version of the play, “One Man, Two Guvenors.” The play was originally adapted by Richard Bean from the 18th century commedia dell’arte performance, ‘The Servant of Two Masters,’ by Carlo Goldoni. Bean’s play replaces the original Italian setting with Brighton, England in 1963.
The play was performed at the Greytown Country Club on Thursday, 2 November 2023. The actors excelled on the stage by using traditional commedia techniques and exuding energy in their physicality. Play performances are an excellent opportunity for the actors and the audience to enter into another world. The play takes place in Brighton, 1963, a time of love, the beginning of womens’ liberation movement, race riots, the Beatles, JFK, Martin Luther King, skiffle bands and of course fish and chips in the pub.
Dramatic performance is a way for scholars to develop their confidence on the stage. This requires bravery and commitment. There is always an element of risk. Well done to these brave Wembley scholars who entertained the audience.
