The Crawford International Ruimsig Grade 2 students embarked on an exciting learning journey as they were introduced to their new Unit of Inquiry titled “How the world works.” This unit aimed to foster their understanding of fundamental scientific and engineering concepts. To kick start the unit, the students were presented with an engaging and hands-on activity: building their own bridges capable of supporting a toy car.

Armed with a variety of supplies, the young learners eagerly dived into the challenge, their minds brimming with curiosity and creativity. The task required them to think critically about the strongest shapes and structures, encouraging them to explore basic principles of physics and engineering. As they huddled together in groups, brainstorming and planning, they also honed their collaborative skills, learning the importance of teamwork and effective communication.

Throughout the process, the students experienced the joy of discovery and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles together. They eagerly put their ideas into action, constructing bridges using an assortment of materials, testing their designs, and making improvements along the way. As the toy cars traversed across their creations, the sense of accomplishment and wonderment filled the air.

This immersive activity not only provided a practical way to comprehend the concept of structural stability but also ignited a passion for exploration and learning about the world around them. By blending fun and education, the Grade 2 students seamlessly transitioned into their new unit of inquiry, excited and eager to uncover the mysteries of how the world works.
