St Teresa’s Senior Primary School was invited to participate in the Rotary Club of Sandton’s poetry competition in Term 2. The prompt given was, ‘It could be Wednesday’. Many of our girls found the prompt quite abstract but gave their all and produced some beautiful pieces of poetry.

The poems that were submitted were adjudicated by Dr Deirdre Byrne of the Institute for Gender Studies at the University of South Africa. Dr Byrne is especially well-known for her research in English Literature, Media Studies, and Social Theory making her the perfect adjudicator for this year’s Poetry Competition.

Out of 370 entries from more than 25 schools in Johannesburg, Hannah Black in Grade 7came out on top. She achieved first place in the Grade 4 – 7 division. Her poem is beautifully written, with stunning figurative imagery and impressive use of diction. The Grade 7s also took part in the Kingsmead Book Fair Young Writers’ competition, where Hannah was highly commended for her essay, entitled ‘Runaway’.

We are so proud of Hannah’s accomplishments and we thank her for representing our school so well.
