Westville, Durban – The Westville Schools’ Hockey Trust is proud to relaunch the newly revamped Astro Turf. The Astro Turf is home to Westville Girls’ High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Westville Senior Primary School as well as the The Gryphons Hockey Club, our community club who uses the Astro turf as its home ground. The Westville Schools’ Hockey Trust is managed by the Principals and SGB Chairpersons of the three Westville schools, who share the goal of growing and uplifting the sport of hockey within the Westville Community.

The Westville Schools’ Hockey Trust Astro was established in 2008 and the completed Astro facility was opened in 2010 on the Westville Girls’ High School premises. The Gryphons Hockey Club, which was formed out of the combining of Pinetown Hockey Club and Westville Hockey Club in 2014, joins the schools as a community hockey club comprised of parents, guardians, learners from the
three schools and members of the greater Westville community and surrounds.

After being in use for over 10 years, the time came for the revamp of the Astro turf which includes many new features that will assist with the quality of broadcasting games on SuperSport Schools, the most notable being a more sophisticated irrigation system, new lighting and a change of colour to the Astro from green to blue. Comments from Principals: “We are delighted that our schools have managed to combine our resources and deliver a world-class Astro Turf that will see the growth of Outdoor Hockey into the future.”
Russell Untiedt – Principal of Westville Girls’ High School “Westville Senior Primary is very proud to be a part of this amazing development for the Westville Schools. Westville Senior has recently had an advance of its sports programme and the opening of the
revamped and resurfaced Westville Schools Hockey Trust Astro will not only add to our offering and the upliftment of hockey at our schools, but we also look forward to the increased participation of learners from our Primary School, and the Westville Junior Primary school through the Gryphons Academy based at the astro.

The presentation today goes to show the strength and increased collaboration of the Westville Schools as we strive for excellence both on and off the pitch.” Robert Webber – Principal of Westville Senior Primary School “It is wonderful to see this Westville Schools Hockey Astro revived in looks and functionality ready to continue serving Westville Senior, Girls’, Boys’ and the Gryphon Hockey Club for generations to come. Furthermore, we are excited about the future developments that are in the pipeline.” Graham Steele- Principal of Westville Boys’ High School The Westville Schools’ Hockey Trust is ready to host many more games while developing the sports within our young athletes across our schools and keeping the love of the sport alive beyond schools.
