Remembrance Day Service at St Charles College

On 11 November people all around the world observe Remembrance Day to honour the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, particularly since WW1. In solidarity, St Charles College has continued in this custom setting aside the busyness of the day to remember and honour the fallen, especially giving thought to those St Charles College Old Boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Members of the Chamber Choir sang a stirring version of John Newton’s, ‘Amazing Grace’ before our 2025 Head Boy, Matthew Bishop, addressed staff, boys and guests, underscoring the significance of the day. Callum Hancock and Thingo Makhathini respectively played the two calls, the Last Post and the Reveille. During the silence we paused to remember those who gave their lives in war, and with gratitude lay a wreath for those St Charles boys who offered their lives in these wars. The release of doves, symbolising the release of our loved ones, capped a meaningful Remembrance Day service for St Charles College.

We are grateful to have had members of the South African Legion participating in the ceremony who lay a wreath in memory of fallen comrades. While we hold our own service at St Charles College, we mindfully join with many around the world to pray for those in the midst of strife and conflict. On this Remembrance Day, we offer our prayers for peace, unity, and a world where the lessons of the past lead us to a future of greater understanding and cooperation. – Mr Ross Ducasse (St Charles College Chaplain).
