LIFESAVING
Congratulations to Merrifield students Janey-Heather Wood (Grade 8) and Chelsea Fowles (Grade 5) who competed in the recent DHL National Lifesaving Champs. Chelsea placed 2nd in Beach Flags and placed 11th overall. Janey-Heather Placed 3rd in Board, 3rd in the mixed 200m Lifesaver relay, 2nd in the mixed 200m Manikin relay, and placed 4th overall. Outstanding!

SQUASH
11 April: Merrifield College vs Selborne C in the Border Schools High Schools League. Merrifield lost 12-1.

DEBATING
12 April: At the Merrifield Forum Discussion evening, Merrifield A and B placed a joint second.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
Congratulations to Merrifield Matric students Mbutokazi Mavuso and Inga Wait who took part in the WIDPSC (World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship) from 23 April – 26 April.

Mbutokazi placed 15th overall (the top SA performer) and Inga 47th out of 115 participants from around the world.

WIDPSC is an annual international English language debating and public speaking tournament for individual high school-level students representing different countries.

The Championship is represented by a diverse mix of high schools from countries as far reaching as Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, the United States, England, South Africa, Lithuania, Pakistan, Cyprus, Argentina, Botswana, Israel, India, South Korea, Zimbabwe and Germany.

13 April: Border League Debating, hosted by Merrifield. Results: Seniors: Merrifield A vs Stirling A – Merrifield won. Merrifield B vs Stirling B – Merrifield won. Juniors: Merrifield vs Hudson Park – Merrifield won.

20 April: Debating Seniors Merrifield B vs Clarendon A; Merrifield narrowly lost.

21 April: Debating results from Alexander Road. Merrifield A vs Pearson A – Pearson won; Merrifield B vs Alex Road A – Merrifield won and Akiera Govender was named best speaker.

TENNIS

13 April: Tennis senior boys vs Grens A. Merrifield won 5-1.

20 April: Tennis Senior boys vs Stirling A. Merrifield won 4-2.

CYCLING

Skyla Holmes and Lisakanya Zantsi placed first and second respectively in the Nippers category of the recent East Cape XCO cycle race.

SACCEE

12 April: SACEE Fun with Words for Grade 4s and 5s was hosted by Merrifield. The home team placed 1st, followed by Stirling in 2nd place and Hudson in 3rd place.

22 April: Merrifield Intermediate Phase team placed second in the General Knowledge event.

16 April: Merrifield 1st team vs Hudson, lost 3-0.

19 April: Merrifield U11 vs Buffalo Flats, lost 3-1.

13 April: Merrifield 2nd team hockey boys v Lilyfontein recorded a 6-0 win.

14-17 April: Merrifield 1st Team Boys and Girls Oakhill Tour in Knysna. Results: Boys vs SACS 2-1 win; vs Glenwood 2-0 win; vs Oakhill 2-2 draw; vs Pearson 4-0 win; vs Stellenberg 2-1 win.
