Maritzburg College sport results

The past weekend saw Maritzburg College’s soccer teams take on DHS, including the 1st team clash for the Raw Cup. There was also rugby 7s action with College’s U15A team finishing in 2nd place at the DHS tournament. Maritzburg College 1st XI travelled to Zimbabwe to take part in the St George’s CABS T20 Festival, competing against top schools from SA and Zim progressing to the semi-final. Well done to the College A team canoeists who secured gold at the canoe polo interschool tournament.

KZN Biathle Championship

Well done to 5th former Matthew Lock who competed at KZN Biathle Champs yesterday and placed 2nd in the U19 category. He has qualified to represent KZN team at the SA Champs in Nelspruit on the 4th and 5th October. Biathle is a multi-sport that is part of the Modern Pentathlon and involves continuous running swimming and running.

Soccer

College hosted traditional rivals Durban High School on Saturday in a total of 18 soccer fixtures. Overall results on the day, saw College win nine games, drawing three and losing six. 1st team report (Mr Nic Haswell, 1st XI coach and Director of Soccer) The 1st team game was a scrappy but entertaining affair, with College twice coming back from a goal down to make the score 2-2. Just when it looked like the Raw Cup would be decided on penalties, a defensive error from College gave DHS one last chance and they took advantage of it grabbing the winning goal to seal a 3-2 victory and returning to Durban with the coveted Cup.
This week College will host Northwood High School, whilst the 1st team will participate in the Jody Momple Pmb & Midlands FA Cup at Hilton College on Saturday and Sunday.

Rugby 7s:

On Friday the College U15 rugby 7s teams were in action at the DHS tournament. Well done to the U15A team finished in 2nd place overall losing to DHS in the final, 19-29. The U15B team finished 7th overall. On Saturday the U17 team lost to DHS in the cup quarter final.

U15A

  • Vs Glenwood lost 24-19
  • Vs DHS 2 won 10-5
  • Cup QF: vs Pioneer 35-12
  • Cup SF: vs Northwood won 40-7
  • Cup Final: vs DHS 1 lost 29-19

U15B

  • Vs Northwood 2 won 31-12
  • Vs Westville 1 lost 43-7
  • Cup QF: vs DHs 1 lost 29-0
  • Plate SF: vs Sarel Cilliers lost 19-26
  • Placed 7th

U17

  • Vs Westville 2nd won 12-7
  • Vs Glenwood won 31-7
  • Cup QF: vs DHS lost 0-42
  • Plate SF: vs Michaelhouse lost 12-19

Cricket

Maritzburg College 1st XI travelled to Zimbabwe to take part in the St George’s CABS T20 Festival, competing against top schools from SA and Zim.
Summary of results
MC vs Peterhouse – Won by 7 wickets (Dzanibe 58*, Du Toit 2/7)
MC vs Hellenic Academy – Lost by 75 runs
MC vs St Andrew’s B – Won by 46 runs (Pembridge & Willson 3-fers)
MC vs St Albans – Lost by 7 wickets
MC vs Prince Edward – Won by 8 wickets (Dzanibe 62* off 22!)
College progressed into the semi-finals, and were up against St Andrew’s, eventually losing by 50 runs. Well done to all our players and coaches! We look forward to some great cricket action back home in the weeks ahead.

Canoeing

Congratulations to the College’s A team canoeists who won the canoe polo interschools tournament at Curry’s Post. College’s B team finished in 4th place.
