Camps Bay High School recently hosted a Fun Run in Camps Bay, welcoming young runners from Langa Athletics Club, including athletes from Zimasa Community School, and Gugulethu Athletics Club. The event celebrated the rapid growth of the school’s newly established running club while fostering connections across communities. A highlight was the generous donation of approximately 100 pairs of running shoes, including specialist track spikes, with an estimated retail value of R250,000, sponsored through HOKA and facilitated by Run Norway. The donation benefited athletes from Camps Bay High School as well as runners from Langa and Gugulethu, giving many young runners access to proper footwear to support their training and competitions.
“Running has the power to open doors and build confidence in young people,” said Busi Ngcwama.
“This Fun Run was about more than just a race – it was about connection, opportunity, and showing our learners what dedication and perseverance look like. We are incredibly grateful for partnerships like this that allow all our athletes, and those from neighbouring communities, to feel supported and inspired.” Speaking on behalf of HOKA, Camilla Bernal emphasised the importance of supporting young runners across communities.
“We were very happy to include spikes for the track runners in this donation, as we saw a real need for that when we visited last year,” she said. “Having proper running shoes is the most important tool for any athlete. We truly hope these shoes will give young runners – from Camps Bay, Langa and Gugulethu – the confidence and support they need both mentally and physically.” She added that the initiative reflects a long-standing connection between the organisation and the local community.
“Run Norway is the Nordic distributor of HOKA shoes, and our family has been affiliated with Cape Town and Camps Bay High School for many years,” said Camilla Bernal. “We were especially pleased to help young runners from different parts of Cape Town through this Fun Run, and we hope to continue supporting even more children to reach their running potential in the weeks to come.”
The school also extended special thanks to Ms Juliah Mabaya, Manager of the Camps Bay High Running Club, Mr Kundi Mokombwe, the club’s coach, and volunteer parents Mrs Tanya Goddard and Mr Barry Tyson, who coached and ran alongside the learners. Appreciation also goes to the parents who donated food for all participants to enjoy after the Fun Run. “A big thank you to them – we want to keep building this relationship with these clubs; they are such inspiring, dedicated runners,” said Ngcwama. Camps Bay High School looks forward to continuing to build strong relationships with running clubs from Langa and Gugulethu and to creating more opportunities for young athletes to grow, compete, and be inspired through running.
