De La Salle Holy Cross College learners Chess Achievements

We would like to extend huge congratulations to Yishai Pillay, Sebastian Stelloh, Alexander Stelloh, Matthew Ma and Peiqi Shi for their remarkable achievements during the South African Junior Chess Championships that were held at the Wild Coast in December. Participation in this event has earned them their Gauteng Chess Colours.

Yishai Pillay and Sebastian Stelloh played for the U8 Johannesburg Metro Team and achieved 1st place overall. They both won board trophies with Yishai Pillay winning 4 out of 5 games and Sebastian Stelloh winning 5 out of 5 games. Having qualified to play in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships they will be awarded Provincial Chess Colours and will go on to compete for their South African Chess Colours.
At 5 years old, Alexander Stelloh was the youngest player at the event and achieved first place out of all the B teams!
Matthew Ma and Peiqi Shi of the U10 B team were placed 3rd overall. This tournament is of great importance to the chess players in South Africa. It gives them an opportunity to represent their region and participate against the best in the country. It also allows them to participate in the South African Junior Closed Championships after which players will be selected to represent South Africa internationally.
