Curro Hazeldean makes history at National Athletic Championships with 17 medals

Curro Hazeldean smashed a record this weekend by taking home a total of 17 medals at the ASA National Championships held at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. This achievement is the highest number of medals ever won by a Curro school.
Twenty of Curro Hazeldean’s most talented athletes were chosen to represent Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) at the ASA National Championship and each put on an outstanding performance, proving that as a school, the Curro Hazeldean athletes have grown on all levels of their sport.
Displaying exceptional skills and talent throughout the competition, the smaller than average sports performing school from Pretoria earned six gold medals, eight silver medals and one bronze medal. Curro Hazeldean athletes showcased their ability to excel in a variety of track and field events, including sprinting, middle distance, hurdles, and long jump.
Special mention goes to grade seven learner Tiisetso Malungane who was selected to represent Gauteng at the Primary Schools National Athletics Championships and achieved a bronze medal in the 1500m as well as a silver medal in the 800m.
Matodz Ndou, (U18), together with Kamohelo Ramatsebe, (U20) Sandiso Jekem (U18) and Paballo Radebe (U20) were also chosen to represent South Africa at the African Games that will take place in Lusaka, Zambia from Saturday, 29 April to Wednesday, 3 May 2023.
Curro Hazeldean Executive Head Pierre le Roux shared his joy and congratulations with the team, commenting, “I am incredibly proud of our Curro Hazeldean athletes and their outstanding achievements at the South Africa National Championships. Each of them competed against some of the toughest opponents, but their dedication, hard work and determination paid off. Their impressive success is a significant milestone for our school and is a testament to our continued commitment to sporting excellence. Huge congratulations to all the athletes and their coaches.”
