In honour of World Book Day on 23 April, Cannons Creek Independent Primary School put into play several initiatives in the preceding week. Every day, the bell was rung at various times and pupils needed to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), as well as Torch Thursday where pupils cosy within a blanket fort, spent some time enjoying reading their books.
The school also hosted ‘Hooked on Books’ who dramatised book trailers from modern-day children’s books, with the aim of getting children hooked on books! The show was very exciting since they allowed for audience participation, and used plenty of humour and fun songs.

Ms Tessa Follett-Botha (Grade 1 Teacher) with some of her pupils who dressed as ‘Cat in the Hat’ – Levi Leuner, Nina du Preez, Harrison Baird, Ruth Gieser, Shivai Ramsaroop, and Tyler Foster-Jordaan
‘Help the Rural Child’ also displayed a variety of books for parents and pupils to browse and purchase, along with the school collecting previously loved books to be donated to this organisation. The action-packed week culminated in the Grade 1-6 pupils dressing up as their favourite Dr Seuss characters, and taking part in a Cool2Care group activity where groups tackled various book-themed challenges together such as Dr Seuss riddles, a ‘Cat in the Hat’ word search, needing to rhyme things with all things Dr Seuss, and some simple Maths riddles drawing on ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’. Dr Seuss encourages us to be curious about the world around us, to ask questions and open not only our eyes but our minds and hearts, too.

A person’s a person, no matter how small-and a reader’s a leader, most of all!” Grade 4 pupils enjoyed dressing up and exploring the whimsical world of Dr Seuss – Gemma Goldman, Abigail Spencer, Rae Rockhill, Radley Smart, Kira Hemp, and Ada Irvine. These initiatives are especially relevant amidst our current climate where nationally “81% of our Grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning in any language”. It is important for schools and parents to foster a love for reading, and to encourage independent reading.

Oh, the places they’ll go! Dr Seuss certainly inspired the Grade 5s – .”Xia Walker, Katie Roets, Zidane Adams, Khanyisile Ncawana. Front row: Charlie-Rose Hughes and Nicole Kritzinger.
