In honour of World Book Day on 23 April, Cannons Creek Independent Primary School put into play several initiatives in the preceding week. Every day, the bell was rung at various times and pupils needed to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), as well as Torch Thursday  where pupils cosy within a blanket fort, spent some time enjoying reading their books.

Liam (Grade 6) and Zak (Grade R) Bester displaying sibling power, dressed as ‘Thing 1’ and ‘Thing

The school also hosted ‘Hooked on Books’ who dramatised book trailers from modern-day children’s books, with the aim of getting children hooked on books! The show was very exciting since they allowed for audience participation, and used plenty of humour and fun songs.

Ms Tessa Follett-Botha (Grade 1 Teacher) with some of her pupils who dressed as ‘Cat in the Hat’ – Levi Leuner, Nina du Preez, Harrison Baird, Ruth Gieser, Shivai Ramsaroop, and Tyler Foster-Jordaan

‘Help the Rural Child’ also displayed a variety of books for parents and pupils to browse and purchase, along with the school collecting previously loved books to be donated to this organisation. The action-packed week culminated in the Grade 1-6 pupils dressing up as their favourite Dr Seuss characters, and taking part in a Cool2Care group activity where groups tackled various book-themed challenges together such as Dr Seuss riddles, a ‘Cat in the Hat’ word search, needing to rhyme things with all things Dr Seuss, and some simple Maths riddles drawing on ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’. Dr Seuss encourages us to be curious about the world around us, to ask questions and open not only our eyes but our minds and hearts, too.

A person’s a person, no matter how small-and a reader’s a leader, most of all!” Grade 4 pupils enjoyed dressing up and exploring the whimsical world of Dr Seuss – Gemma Goldman, Abigail Spencer, Rae Rockhill, Radley Smart, Kira Hemp, and Ada Irvine. Front row: Lea Dorasamy, Matthew Hart, Inathi Ngadlela-Jan, and James September.

These initiatives are especially relevant amidst our current climate where nationally “81% of our Grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning in any language”. It is important for schools and parents to foster a love for reading, and to encourage independent reading.

Oh, the places they’ll go! Dr Seuss certainly inspired the Grade 5s – .”Xia Walker, Katie Roets, Zidane Adams, Khanyisile Ncawana. Front row: Charlie-Rose Hughes and Nicole Kritzinger.

Mr Darren Osborn (Digital Literacy & Coding Teacher) with his son Oliver (Grade RR), showing that fostering a love for reading starts at home

Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Our Grade 6s celebrated in Dr Seuss style – Caleb Februarie, Sophie Schaal, Kanushi Sharma, Emily Gardiner-Atkinson, Atiya Kaplen. Front: Ronan Potgieter, Isla Rockhill, Amy Hoflinger, and Liam Bester.

A new novel character, ‘Wasket in a Basket’ that Dr Seuss might need to include for future books – Shaughan Gay, Grade 5.

Great teamwork was shown during the Seuss-themed challenges

From ‘Cat in the Hat’ word searches to Dr Seuss maths riddles, our pupils proved that reading makes you sharp.

Fostering a love for reading starts with making it fun. Whether they were counting Red Fish or Blue Fish, Cannons Creek pupils tackled the book-themed challenges and dress-up, with Seuss-style flair

Seuss style: it runs in the family for siblings Chloe (Grade 3) and Charlotte (Grade RR) van Haght.

Lights out, sotires on – Grade 3 pupils got cosy for Torch Thursday – Rebecca Marjawar, Hunter Classen, and Benjamin Brett.

Grade 3 pupils showing that any time is the right time for a literary adventure – Fawaaz Ismail, Daniel Gopal, and Umar Phoplonker.

Leading by example – to raise a reader, you have to be a reader. Cannons Creek staff weren’t

Grade 1 pupils dressing up as twins for the love of literacy – Daniel Habtemichael, Jaya Sorensen, Viktor Sorensen, Pablo Maillet-Contoz, Lesedi Oliphant. Front row: Ella Vink, Sumairah Begg, Ethan Vink, and Hannah Webb.
