From hail to smores… Fun-filled, adventurous and educational, are just a few words to describe the Land Service Club camp of 2022. On 29 April 2022 the Land Service members of Aliwal North High School had their annual Club camp. It was a fully packed camp and the learners experienced all four values of Land Service.
On Friday afternoon the school busses left for Breakaway trials with 40 excited campers in tow. After the tents were pitched the Land Service members went on a hike and had to endure numerous challenges. They were greeted with a refreshing shower of rain and even some hail. Just like some challenges in life can be compared to this storm it ended with a beautiful rainbow appearing through the clouds. The campers realised that even though we experience difficulties in life there will always be something to be grateful for. After the hike the campers had to divide into four groups and had to prepare their own “potjiekos”. Each group had to paint and design their own team flag and compose a team war cry. As always a good lantern stalk was done, which was thoroughly enjoyed. A big campfire was made, and the campers sang Land Service songs while eating smores and drinking a steaming cup of coffee.
Saturday was started with the gospel, and the Lords presents were felt in the serenity of the campsite. Campers read the bible in small groups and shared amongst each other what they were grateful for. A traditional Land Service breakfast were served, with our gear packed we were ready for our journey back to Aliwal-North. One of the four Land Service values is love for others. This value was lived out by filling up empty coffee pots with soup mix and a recipe for how to prepare it. Each “jar of hope” can serve four people.
Aliwal-North Fire Brigade and Emergency services came to speak to the campers and gave them some tips to use in an emergency. The camper asked a lot of questions. After the session the learners had a clearer vision about the service that the Fire Brigade offer to communities. Thank you to Mr James Crause and Mr Lindisile Skeyi for offering their valuable time. The camp would not be complete without some handcraft activities en this one was very special. Mr Lollie Greyvenstein taught the campers how to do sandblasting. Each camper received a glass with the Land Service crest, with Klubkamp 2022 crafted on. Thank you Mr Lollie that was fun. The campers were shown how to bake a chocolate cake in 6 minutes. Although it took another 6 minutes to bake. It took only 2 minutes for these hungry campers to devour. Thank you to these adults for making the camp more memorable. Mnr. Etienne von Gericke, Ms. Ane von Gericke, Mr. Pieter van Schalkwyk, Mr. Petrie Wagener, Mr. Adriaan Prinsloo en Ms. Zanie van Schalkwyk.:
