Welcome to this month’s edition of The Centre Circle, BSI Football’s official newsletter, where we bring you closer to the heart of our Academy.
In this issue, we unpack the latest action with our Coaches’ Review of the GDPL, gain valuable insights from our Sports Scientist, Julian Russ, on the ‘Road to Recovery’, and celebrate standout performances with our Player of the Month.
You’ll also find upcoming fixtures, an introduction to the passionate individuals behind the programme in Meet the Coaches, and a must-watch feature highlighting five common mistakes parents of young athletes make.
BSI Coaches Emphasise Growth Amid Challenging GDPL Start It has been an eventful start to the GDPL season for BSI’s football teams, with early results proving difficult across the board. However, from a coaching perspective, the focus remains firmly on long-term player development rather than short-term outcomes. A positive sign emerged as the U19 side secured their first point of the campaign with a hard-fought 1–1 draw away to Fourteen Overflow. The
result has sparked optimism within the camp and could signal a turning point for the squad as the season progresses.
Despite this, coaches have been clear that progress is not measured solely by the scoreboard. Coach Ricardo Lourenco highlighted the U.15 team’s recent performance as a strong example of development in action. “The boys did the right things and executed what was asked of them,” he explained. “The results aren’t going our way yet, but the development certainly is and that’s great to see. The results will come later; it’s not our primary concern right now.” This philosophy is echoed across all BSI GDPL teams, where emphasis is placed on players applying what they learn in training during
competitive matches.
Coach Ntsika reinforced this perspective, noting that external observers may not always understand the club’s approach. “Football is often judged purely on results, but that doesn’t always reflect the objectives of a club or a coach,” he said. “It’s a privilege to help shape young footballers’ careers, working with different skill sets and
personalities.” He added that the coaching staff remain committed to fostering a positive environment built on growth and confidence. “We encourage the boys to play without fear and without a negative mindset. That’s how real development happens.” While the scoreboard may not yet reflect it, BSI’s coaching staff remain
confident that their investment in development will yield results in the long run.
Road to Recovery :
Here at BSI, I fulfil a hybrid role as both a Biokineticist and Strength and Conditioning Coach, working closely with players in our Youth Development Programme (YDP) and Elite Development Programme (EDP). As is well understood, injuries are an inherent part of football. While they cannot be completely eliminated, a large part of my role is focused on minimising injury risk through structured load monitoring, tailored strength and conditioning programmes, and regular testing to track player development and readiness throughout the season.
Despite these preventative measures, certain incidents remain unavoidable. This has unfortunately been the case for two of our academy players, Caide (YDP) and Theano (EDP), who both sustained injuries during the season.
Caide suffered a severe ankle injury in December, which resulted in multiple fractures. He underwent surgery to realign the bones and facilitate proper healing. Due to the seriousness of the injury and surgical intervention, his recovery timeline is understandably longer. Encouragingly, Caide has successfully completed his post
operative phase and is making strong progress in the early stages of physiotherapy-led rehabilitation with our in-house physiotherapist. Once he meets the required criteria to progress, he will transition into the strength and conditioning phase of rehabilitation, where the focus will be on rebuilding ankle strength, restoring mobility, and improving overall fitness in preparation for a safe return to training.
Theano is currently at a similar stage in his rehabilitation journeybut has progressed at a faster rate than initially expected. Following approximately three weeks of physiotherapy-led rehabilitation for a knee ligament injury sustained during a GDPL match, he is now approaching a key milestone. Together with our physiotherapist, Lunga, we will be conducting a series of objective tests to determine whether he is ready to progress into the return to-training phase. Should he meet the necessary criteria, he will move one step closer to returning to the pitch.
Both injuries were non-contact in nature, highlighting a common risk factor within football. Notably, Theano’s accelerated recovery has been supported by his consistent engagement in the academy’s strength and conditioning programme. This reinforces the value of structured gym-based training not only in reducing injury risk but
also in potentially decreasing injury severity and improving recovery timelines when injuries do occur.
We will continue to support both players closely throughout their rehabilitation journeys and look forward to seeing them return to:
Meet the coaches of 2026
Elite Player of the month
Congratulations to Ofentse on being awarded Player of the Month. His application, concentration, and commitment to always trying his best are the key reasons behind this recognition. When a player consistently gives their all, it captures the attention of the technical team, and Ofentse has certainly turned heads. He has shown great progress, and by continuing to put his newly learned skills into practice, along with a better understanding of the demands of the game, he is well placed to take his performance to the next level. Keep pushing and striving for more. Well
done, Ofentse!
Player of the Month
Congratulations to Tshegofatso Motshegwa “T Man” on being awarded Player of the Month, a
well-deserved recognition for his commitment and perseverance. Tman has shown great character by never giving
up, and now he’s getting his moment to shine. He has earned the trust of the technical team and
has been rewarded with a place in the starting line-up for the GDPL fixtures. His development journey has been impressive, but this is just the beginning, now it’s time to keep pushing and striving for even more.
Hard work always pays off. Well done, Tman!
