Parel Vallei High School learner represented SA at the African Continental Track Cycling Championships

Nikalau Volsteedt, from Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West, represented South Africa this week at the African Continental Track Cycling Championships. The annual event, with 14 nations participating, was held at the Cairo International Velodrome from 12 to 16 May. Nikalau participated in the Junior Women’s age category with the most competitive cyclists coming from South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Tunisia. Nikalau achieved her goal of being crowned the Junior Women’s African Champion in the 3000m Individual Pursuit. She not only received the African Champions jersey and Gold medal, but whilst doing so, also broke both the South African and African records for this event. Nikalau also won 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.It has been a truly amazing experience representing South Africa at an event like this and being able to experience new cultures and make friendships with other cyclists who share her passion for cycling. The results are also just rewards for all of the hard training.
