Michaelhouse weekend sport roundup. This time the Midlands weather played ball, but it was only good enough to salvage a handful of thrilling home cricket fixtures against visitors, Clifton College. On the Roy Gathorne Oval, House’s second XI posted a healthy 153/4 with Luke Jankowitz’s 73 (85) and James Asherson’s 51* (88) dragging the innings from the flames, after being reduced to 3/3. The eventual target of 153, was only just enough for the win, as the home side rolled Clifton for 152! Next door on Hannah’s the visiting U16A side got off to a cracking start, cruising to 60/0 in double time.

House’s Cameron Strudwick (5/9 off 9) and skipper, Basti Hofmeyr (4/25 off his 9) put a firm stop to the free flow of runs, although Clifton’s tailenders were able to make something of the total, leaving House 146 runs to chase down. After a scratchy start, and with a captain’s innings of 70*, the home side were able to chase the score down with relative ease for a five wicket win. Down the avenue on Meadows, House’s 15B lads put in a classic team performance to notch up a seven wicket win, chasing down the total with seven overs to spare. Over the road on Tarpeys, House’s Jarred van Niekerk (55) and Morgan Cantlay (95*) posted a daunting 224/1 in the U14B clash. The chase unraveled quickly for Clifton when Heath Turner helped himself to three wickets off his first three balls, taking two more with his next four balls for figures of 7/8. Clifton’s innings ran out of steam on 48, handing the boys from Balgowan a comfortable 176 run victory.

KZN U18 Victor Ludorum, Jack Shooter

While all 16 basketball fixtures were washed out in Durban, the first XI cricket match was salvaged with Michael Thornton’s 5/19 pivotal in reducing Clifton’s run chase to 124 all out, 18 runs short of the victory mark. Michaelhouse’s third XI enjoyed a nine wicket win in Durban. While the U15A game was abandoned, house’s U14A boys fell 24 runs short in their pursuit of Clifton’s 178/6.

Michaelhouse’s water polo club enjoyed positive results at the weekend’s KZN Top Ten Tournament for U14, U15, and first teams, winning 15 of their combined 21 fixtures. Having won four of their seven games, House’s firsts were placed fourth overall, while the U15A side came in third with five wins from seven starts. With just one loss to Kearsney College, House’s U14A boys finished in second place.

Michaelhouse canoe Club

On the back of retaining the 2022 Fish River Canoe Marathon School’s Trophy,  Michaelhouse’s Canoe Club put in another strong showing at the final Interschool event for the season – the Enduro.

House’s first team narrowly beat the Maritzburg College first team by just five seconds to clinch the interschool league for 2022; while the Michaelhouse second team placed third overall. Michaelhouse paddler Jack Shooter was crowned the U18 Victor Ludorum.
