AWSUM had a chat with Aden da Costa first team rugby captain of Wynberg Boys’ High School. We asked him about their season and what his expectations are for the game against SACS.
Aden da Costa
How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries? Our team should be at full strength this weekend. All of our SA “A” players will be back and ready to fire. Our two SA teammates will add a lot of support from the sidelines.
Are you happy with your results this year? It’s been a season of ups and downs, history created, and some streaks lost. But the next game is the only one that counts.
What do you expect from SACS on Saturday? We have played against SACS since we were 7 years old. They won’t back down, but I hope they know that we won’t either.
What does being captain of Wynberg mean to you? Being captain means everything to me. It’s been my dream since Grade R. Wynberg has provided me with so many opportunities, and I will be eternally grateful.
Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions? If you count the same breakfast every game day as a tradition, then maybe. But otherwise, nothing special or crazy. I also like to be at the field at least three hours before we play.
How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators? Wynberg has a huge support network, but the team and I never feel pressure coming from our old boys or supporters, thanks to our coaches. All we can do is give our best.
Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why? Cristiano Ronaldo. Not because of the sport he plays (soccer is not my thing) but for who he is. He is a phenomenal athlete who never took his talent for granted and continued to train at the front even as he got older. Even though he is a rockstar, he cares sincerely for people and has made a positive impact on many lives.
