High School Induction Ceremony at Wembley College

The Wembley College Form 2 Induction Ceremony took place on Tuesday, 20 February 2024, marking not just the beginning of the Form 2’s journey into the High School but the planting of new seeds in the fertile grounds of the school.  The Form 2 scholars were assigned a matric mentor at the beginning of the year who looks after them throughout the year.  Enduring the first half of the term being unable to wear their ties or blazers, the Form 2s were delighted to ring the bell on the school steps before being awarded their uniforms in the hall by their matric mentors.  A pledge of allegiance to the school was signed by each scholar.

The academic head Mr Dewald Wolmarans described the path of a new scholar at the school and the role of the teachers, “Our role, as your teachers and mentors, is like that of gardeners.  We are here to nurture, to provide knowledge, wisdom, and support.  Through academics, we will challenge your minds, encouraging you to think critically, question deeply, and explore the vast landscapes of learning available to you.  In sports and extracurricular activities, you will learn the value of teamwork, the importance of discipline, and the joy of pushing your limits. These experiences will not only strengthen your bodies but will also teach you lessons in perseverance, leadership, and the importance of striving towards your goals.  However, growth is not without its challenges. Just as trees face storms and winds that test their strength, you too will encounter obstacles and challenges.

There will be days when the weight of academics feels overwhelming, when the pressure of competition tests your determination, or when the fear of failure looms large.  But remember, it is through facing these storms that a tree’s roots grow deeper, anchoring it firmly to the ground and allowing it to stand tall against the elements.  Let us also not forget, the strongest trees do not grow in isolation but in a forest, surrounded by others. You, too, are surrounded by your peers, your teachers, and your families – a community that will support you, challenge you, and celebrate your achievements. Together, you will grow, learn, and face the challenges ahead.  As you embark on this exciting journey at Wembley College, just remember that every lesson learned, every challenge faced, and every success achieved is a step towards becoming that strong, majestic tree. Your journey here is about laying down deep roots of knowledge, integrity, and character, which will serve as your foundation for a lifetime.”
