Reddam House Helderfontein, a member of the prestigious Inspired Education Group, is proud to announce the appointment of Brian Armitage as the new Executive Head.

Brian joins Reddam House Helderfontein with an outstanding background in educational leadership, having most recently served as Deputy Headmaster of Student Affairs at St Peter’s College. Known for his collaborative leadership style and strong strategic vision, Brian is celebrated for driving student wellness, fostering inclusive school culture and championing innovation in education.

Ravi Nadasen, CEO of Inspired Education Group Africa and the Middle East, says, “Brian brings with him not only a wealth of experience but a deep alignment with the values of Inspired schools. His focus on emotional intelligence, student development, and strategic leadership will be instrumental in the next chapter of Reddam House Helderfontein’s growth.”

With more than two decades in education, Brian’s leadership is defined by compassion, integrity, and clarity. He places strong emphasis on nurturing a school culture in which both staff and students feel seen, supported and empowered. Commenting on his appointment, Brian says, “My vision is to create a school environment where every student and staff member feels genuinely valued, included, and empowered. I want Reddam House Helderfontein to be known for nurturing self-confidence, developing character, and delivering a values-based education of the highest quality. My aim is for us to be the school of choice for families and the most sought-after place of employment for educators.”

A father of two daughters – one a Chartered Accountant, the other in her final year of a Bachelor of Education – Brian understands the significance of a values-driven home and school environment. He has been married to his wife, Roselene, for over 30 years.

Q&A with Brian Armitage, Executive Head of Reddam House Helderfontein

 What leadership qualities define you?
I lead with both heart and strategy. I value humility, welcome feedback, and work to uplift those around me. I am calm and adaptable, with emotional intelligence at the centre of my approach. My strength in strategic thinking allows me to align everyday decisions with long-term goals. I believe in servant leadership—putting people first while maintaining a clear and inspiring vision.

 What is your leadership philosophy?
It’s rooted in connection, inspiration, and purpose. I lead with integrity and a values-driven mindset. I build strong relationships, communicate with empathy, and respond rather than react. Leadership, to me, is about creating environments where others feel safe to grow and are inspired to achieve their best.

 What makes Reddam House Helderfontein stand out?
Reddam House Helderfontein is a nurturing, student-centred school where each learner is supported to reach their full potential. The school’s commitment to individualised attention, wellbeing, and excellence—alongside its state-of-the-art facilities and vibrant boarding community—makes it truly exceptional.

 

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your education career?
That strong, authentic relationships are the foundation of meaningful growth—for students and staff alike. At the heart of great teaching is connection. When students feel safe and supported, they thrive.

 What drives your passion for education?
A deep belief in student development and transformation. There’s nothing more fulfilling than helping young people become confident, capable individuals with a strong sense of purpose.

 What habits support your mental health?
Gardening plays a big role in helping me reset and reflect. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that growth—like leadership—takes patience, care and time.

 What motivates you personally and professionally?
The knowledge that I can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. It’s incredibly motivating to know that my presence and support can uplift and empower others.

 What advice would you give your teenage self?
“Don’t be in such a rush to finish high school.” I missed out on so much by not fully appreciating the opportunities and relationships that those years offer.

 What is your favourite quote?

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” — Maya Angelou

 What are you most proud of?
Breaking the cycle of hardship in my family. I’m one of five siblings, and the only one to earn a degree. Raising two daughters who are educated, values-driven, and grounded is the legacy I’m most proud of.
