The matric results for 2024 have been released, and Evolve Online School proudly celebrates its top achiever, Ruan van der Walt, who secured an incredible full house of seven distinctions. Ruan’s success is a testament to his unwavering dedication, resilience, and the unique opportunities provided by online education.Ruan’s academic journey began at Evolve Online School during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the 2024 matric cohort, Ruan was among the students who began their high school years during the pandemic’s peak, navigating unprecedented challenges. Despite these hurdles, Ruan embraced the online schooling model and thrived, completing Grades 8 and 9 in a single year. This extraordinary achievement set the tone for his high school career and laid a strong foundation for his future success.Reflecting on his academic year, Ruan describes it as “stressful and fast-paced.” Yet, his approach to challenges was both mature and methodical. “I didn’t let setbacks discourage me. Instead, I used them as opportunities to address weaknesses and strengthen my understanding,” he shares. This mindset not only helped him excel academically but also shaped his personal growth. One of the standout moments and highlights of Ruan’s 2024 year was his exceptional performance in IT and Computer Applications Technology (CAT). He dedicated significant time to completing his Practical Assessment Tasks (PATs), achieving full marks. “The PATs consumed most of my year, but they were worth it. They were a highlight of my academic journey,” he says.

Ruan’s commitment to his studies paid off, with distinctions across all his subjects. His meticulous time management and disciplined routine ensured he stayed ahead of his workload, even during the pressure of final exams. His advice to future matrics is simple but profound: “Start early, follow a schedule, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.”Ruan’s experience at Evolve Online School highlights the adaptability required in an online learning environment. The pandemic drastically altered his academic path, leading to homeschooling and a shift to virtual interactions. While the lack of in-person socialization was a challenge, Ruan adapted by focusing on his studies and maintaining a structured routine.”COVID turned my world upside down,” Ruan admits. “But it also gave me the opportunity to develop independence and time management skills.” These skills have not only prepared him for academic success but also for future challenges in university and beyond.

Ruan van der Walt

Looking ahead, Ruan plans to pursue a BCom degree at the University of Johannesburg while exploring his passion for game development and 3D graphic design. Platforms like Blender have already sparked his interest in the mechanics of game creation, and he hopes to combine his technical skills with his creative vision.Ruan’s journey at Evolve Online School has equipped him with valuable life skills, including effective time management, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently. These attributes, he believes, will serve him well in his future endeavours. To the upcoming matriculants, Ruan offers practical advice: “Start early in the year, complete tasks promptly, and stick to a schedule. Most importantly, if you face setbacks, don’t give up—use them as stepping stones to move forward.” His words reflect the wisdom and determination that have defined his own journey.Ruan van der Walt’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and excellence. His seven distinctions are not just a personal triumph but also a proud moment for Evolve Online School, showcasing the potential of online education to foster independent, high-achieving students. As Ruan steps into the next chapter of his academic journey, his achievements serve as an inspiration to his peers and a reminder that with determination and hard work, success is within reach—even in the face of challenges.
