Dundee High School’s sporting teams were in action against Sarel Cilliers this week, producing a mixture of victories, hard-fought draws, and valuable lessons across the hockey, netball, rugby, and chess arenas.
The hockey teams enjoyed a particularly successful outing.
The U.14A and U.16A girls secured narrow but impressive 1-0 victories, while the 2nd team produced a convincing 2-0 win. The boys also battled bravely, with the 2nd team drawing 1-1 and the 1st team sharing the spoils in a goalless encounter. The only defeat came in the girls’ 1st team match, where DHS narrowly lost 1-0.
On the netball courts, the girls delivered some excellent performances. The U.14A team defeated their opponents 16-12, while the U.14B side earned a 6-6 draw. The 2nd team enjoyed a commanding 20-11 victory and the 1st team produced a strong 30-21 win. The U.15A and U.16A teams fought hard despite going down 7-4 and 17-11 respectively.
The rugby fields provided a sterner test for DHS. Despite determined efforts from all teams, Sarel Cilliers emerged victorious in most encounters. The U/14s produced the closest contest, losing 40-24, while the U/16s battled well in a 29-19 defeat. The 2nd team went down 47-10, the 1st XV lost 29-10, and the U/15 side endured a difficult afternoon, losing 80-0. Throughout the day, however, DHS players displayed resilience and commitment to the jersey.
Meanwhile, the DHS chess team engaged Sarel Cilliers in an epic contest that ended in a draw. The match featured intense concentration and strategic brilliance from both schools. A special mention goes to Mr Nkambule, who secured an impressive victory. His success prompted many to joke that all those spare moments spent playing chess were not merely a pastime but preparation for battle.
Across every code, DHS learners represented the school with pride, determination, and sportsmanship, once again showcasing the spirit of the red, black, and white.
