Celebrating eight years of Early Childhood Development support in Noupoort

As the country observes National Child Protection Week, we are reminded that children are the most vulnerable members of our society. A recent event in Noupoort brought together hundreds of children from four community early childhood development (ECD) centres to mark eight years of support from the local wind farm. This event, funded by Noupoort Wind Farm, highlighted the crucial roles of child safety and community development, fostering support through partnerships with local businesses.

“Child Protection Week is a crucial reminder of the need to safeguard our children’s well-being. Our dedication to this cause is reflected in the ongoing support for community development projects. Through events like these, we aim to foster a community where every child is protected and nurtured,” stated Noupoort Wind Farm Economic Development Manager, Sandisiwe Mntonintshi.

Organised by Grob and Alex Services, a local women-owned business and the wind farm’s ABCD grant beneficiary, the event brought together close to 200 children from the four ECD centres. Another enterprise development grant beneficiary, Sinegugu Security, volunteered child protection services, ensuring the safety of the children throughout the event.

Since its inception in 2016, the wind farm has supported these ECD centres, providing fundamental training for teachers and funding their NQF Level 5 qualification as ECD Practitioners. This event, held at Siphiwo Ntsizakalo Stadium, was a testament to these efforts, offering children a day of joy and safety, while highlighting the significance of National Child Protection Week.

Mathilda Reid, a Vrolike Vinkies ECD Center teacher, expressed her gratitude, “Noupoort Wind Farm organised a memorable party that was entertaining and educational. The safe environment they provided was invaluable, and the children had an adventurous, fun-filled day.”

Recognised annually from 28 May to 4 June, National Child Protection Week raises awareness of children’s rights as stated in the South African Constitution and the Children’s Act. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to protect children from maltreatment, neglect, abuse, degradation, and exploitative labour practices.
