Waterstone College was the top-achieving school for Physical Sciences within the Curro group of schools countrywide in 2024. The Grade 12 class achieved an outstanding average close to 70% and exceeded the National IEB average! This success story begins and ends with the hardworking students who persevered. They were intrinsically motivated and deeply committed to the value of excellence that Waterstone College has instilled in them. Key to their success was the strong and supportive relationship I had with the learners. My passion and love for science flowed easily to them, creating an environment where learning was engaging and enjoyable. We laughed, sang, and danced to the rhythms of Physics and Chemistry. The science class radiated positive energy and enthusiasm, enabling the learners to believe in themselves and learn effectively. The science laboratory became their happy place!

Comprehensive notes, practice exercises with varying levels of difficulty, and many past papers were provided to the learners from the beginning of Grade 11. Practical work was an integral part of the learning process and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our learners were equipped with essential scientific skills, fostering a lifelong pursuit of learning. The top achievers flourished with the higher-order questions incorporated into each section of work. Those who initially struggled with Physical Sciences were treated with empathy, and special sessions were arranged for additional support. I was delighted to witness their significant improvement in the final examinations.

Examination techniques were taught and applied in all tests, examinations, and practicals. The assessments met the rigorous standards prescribed by the IEB. Workshops held in the afternoons and on Saturdays allowed us to complete the syllabus timeously. Thereafter, learners worked through past papers to reinforce their scientific knowledge and skills. The Science Department at Waterstone College consists of an exceptional team of educators. Every member of the department is passionate, dedicated, caring, and professional. We work tirelessly toward the common goal of achieving excellence in science.

The leadership of the school has played a vital role in the success of the learners. The Executive Head, Mr. JC Engelbrecht, advocates for excellence in all spheres. He generously allows us to upgrade our resources and equipment while constantly encouraging us to grow and be the best we can be. The Head of School, Ms. Kerry Bailey, has been incredible in her unwavering support of the Science Department. She is a constant source of praise and motivation. The Physical Sciences class of 2024 was inspired by the words of Albert Einstein, who said, “The only way to true human greatness is through the school of hard knocks.” The large picture of Einstein on my wall served as a constant reminder of the essence and magic of science. Congratulations to the Physical Sciences class of 2024 – Waterstone College is very proud of you!
