The Family of Schools Bushman’s River Mile unfolded on a picturesque Sunday, March 10, 2024, blending competitive spirit with a day of enjoyment for swimmers of various levels. Set against the backdrop of the scenic Eastern Cape, this event offered a perfect opportunity for both seasoned competitors and those seeking a leisurely swim. As a post-race treat, the boys were treated to a satisfying meal of burgers and chips, fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration.

In the senior category, where the challenge encompassed a full mile, the athletes navigated the waters with the assistance of a robust current and some sand banks. St Andrew’s College pupil Adam Nurse emerged triumphant, clinching the victory with an impressive time of 16:18.38. Following closely were Nick Franklin in 2nd place and Daniel Arnold securing 3rd place. The junior race, covering half a mile, showcased remarkable talent. James Barber claimed the top spot with a time of 8:28, trailed closely by Chris Coltham in 2nd place and Jacques Prudhon in 3rd. The collective efforts of each participant contributed to the Overall River Mile standings, with Upper securing the top position. Merriman claimed a commendable second place, followed by Armstrong in 3rd, Mullins in 4th, Espin in 5th, and Graham in 6th position.

Special acknowledgment is extended to those who dedicated their Sunday to ensure the event’s seamless execution. A heartfelt thank you to our esteemed starter, Mr Carl Bradfield, as well as the diligent timekeepers – Ms Sue Davis, Mr Tim Barnard, Ms Shirley and Raam Ramsugit. Recognition is also due to the dedicated volunteers who assisted with the setup, Michael Fowlds and Lubabalo Mjali. Ensuring the safety of all participants on the water, we express our gratitude to Mr Pete Andrew’s, and Mr Des and Mrs Lizette Alcock. The Bushman’s River Mile stands as a testament to the school’s vibrant spirit and the collaborative efforts that make such events memorable and successful.
